Blotter: Smoking Burglar on West King, Street Sign Stolen

The following arrest information was supplied by the Malvern Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Criminal mischief... On Aug. 7, police received a report that someone had broken into the abandoned home near on the 100 block of Old Lincoln Highway, near the Bridge Street intersection. The break-in happened some time between July 31 and the date of the report. The storm door was removed, but the intruder likely didn't go into the home due to rotted floorboards. A sculpture in front of the house, valued at $200, was shattered.

Harassment... On Aug. 13, police charged a contractor working at Malvern Pizza with harassment. The man was demanding money for his work on the driveway area, but the business owners said the work was not completed to their satisfaction, and they would pay when it was fixed.

Theft… On Aug. 13, police received a report that, some time between Aug. 10 and 13, unknown actors removed the street sign at Highland and Malvern Ave., valued at $72.

Burglary… On Aug. 16, between 1:30 and 7:59 p.m., a burglar pried open the door of a home on the 200 block of West King Street. When residents returned home, they found $400 in cash was taken and $4,900 worth of jewelry, including gold rings, earrings and bracelets. Damage to the external side door was $550.  Police have no suspects; the only evidence they found was a cigarette.

My neighbors son has a drug problem and along with that comes other problems like stealing to support his habit. He's a nice kid with a problem. During a talk with him earlier this week, he was under the impression that Malvern no longer has police department. He said that he hangs with the council presidents son who told him that his dad did away with the police because they are "creeps."

Now, this is very concerning, because he told me that it will take a long time for the state police to respond (when he's up to no good). Obviously he is misinformed, however, while at Malvern Pizza last night, a Malvern police car drove by and a customer said to his friend, "I thought Malvern did away with it's police." The two did not look like they were up to any good. Those comments scared me!

My point is, there seems to be an increase of crimes in the borough. I feel it's a result of borough council and Mayor McGlone publicizing disbanding of the police. And President VanSciver is still talking about disbanding the police (06/19/12 meeting). Misinformed criminals feel they can come into the borough and commit crimes with little or no chance of getting caught. Borough officials should praise our police for the professionals that they are. Let the public know Malvern has a first class police department. I'm sure they won't. Borough officials have a cowardly tack record of putting their own agenda's and personal issues first before public safety.

Why are you so chummy with a self-confessed thief, and why would you repeat anything he allegedly told you as if it were unquestionably the truth? In addition to poor grammar, your comment has the stench of an unsubstantiated personal character attack. Most distasteful!
