East Whiteland Police Chief Eugene Dooley might soon be spending more time in East Goshen, according to a report in the Daily Local News.
Carmen Battavio, East Goshen supervisor and chairman of the Westtown-East Goshen Police Commission, said the officials met Thursday with East Whiteland Police Chief Gene Dooley and other East Whiteland officials to discuss a deal that would name Dooley interim chief of the Westtown-East Goshen Police Department.
The temporary assignment would come amid broader changes within Westtown-East Goshen Police Department. Thornbury Township has indicated it will not renew its contract with the regional force when it expires at the end of 2012.
Twitter user Leo Sinclair pondered the possible implications of Dooley's temporary assignment, asking "First indication that East Goshen Twp plans to merge with East Whiteland Twp Police?"
East Whiteland Township manager Terry Woodman said a merger is not in the cards, writing in an email:
[T]here have been no conversations between EWT and EG about joint policing. Our only conversation has been about helping out on an interim basis by providing an officer with demonstrated leadership and command experience.
Earlier this year, East Whiteland contracted one of its two police lieutenants, Mark Ercole, to serve as interim chief in Malvern Borough. At a recent East Whiteland Township Board of Supervisors meeting, Dooley called Ercole "the right man for the job."
