In a little over a week, Chester County residents can bring their old electronics and other hazardous waste products to their final resting place -- and away from landfills.

Due to 1986 amendments in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tracks waste materials deemed hazardous "from cradle to grave" and holds various drives encouraging folks to recycle them rather than toss them in landfills.

What materials are considered hazardous?

Hazardous waste consists mostly of electronics -- namely computers, printers, alarm clocks, TVs, telephones, stereo and audio equipment, electric appliances, earphones, cameras, remote controls or even electric toys.

How much can I bring to this recycling event?

Each household may recycle 220 pounds or 25 gallons of hazardous waste products.

What about the information on my hard drive?

Hard drives on computers will be wiped. Cell phones, along with their batteries and accessories, will be donated to Verizon's HopeLine.

When and where is this event?

There are two separate events -- one will be held on Oct. 11 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1373 Enterprise Drive in West Chester. The other will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Government Services Center at 601 Westtown Rd. in West Chester.
