Hibberd Auctions Will Benefit Scholarship Fund
Beloved Malvern educator Josiah Hibberd directed that his belongings be sold to fund a Great Valley scholarship program.
Two upcoming auctions on Feb. 9 and 19 will feature the belongings of celebrated Malvern educator Josiah Hibberd, which will be sold to fund a scholarship program in his honor.
For full details, read the event listing for the Josiah Hibberd Scholarship Fund Auction:
Mr. Hibberd directed that his entire estate be sold, and the proceeds from the sale benefit the newly established Hibberd GVHS Scholarship Fund.
The first auction, on Feb. 9 at 9 a.m., will be preceded by a preview of items on Friday, Feb. 8, from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturday starting at 8 a.m. before the auction.
Hibberd, who died in September 2012, had an extensive collection of items. The full list is available at the event listing, but here are a few examples:
- revolving oak bookcase
- Victorian style mantle clocks
- 4 Edison cylinder phonographs
- Mahogany tabletop Victrola
- shrunken head
- 15-20 replicas of early suits of armor
- cannon balls
- Breou’s Farm Atlas of Chester County
- 100+ sports bobblehead figures
A second, catalogued auction of rare and especially valuable items—like presidential autographs, furniture and fine artwork—will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the same location. Details of that event are also on Josiah Hibberd Scholarship Fund Auction event listing.

The great bear of a man continues to give to the world of education in Malvern from beyond the veil. How fortunate we were to have him in our midst. We should all take note!

in checking the Bunch auction website, sadly they do not have photos of the Feb 9th auction items. And they pulled some of the finer art into the Feb 19th sale but other than the Hibberd clock, you can't tell which pieces belonged to Mr. HIbberd ...ah well, sounds like a grand way to spend a Saturday!!
