How Long to Paint a Mural on Malvern Pizza?
In a Q+A, artist Carrie Kingsbury gives a rough time estimate and describes the best weather for painting and the process of designing such a public work of art.
Malvern Patch: How long will the mural take to paint?
Carrie Kingsbury: One to three weeks.
What is the optimal weather to work in?
50 degrees or above.
How long does a mural last? How do you keep it from degrading or fading over the years?
The wall will be power washed, and then I will use very expensive ($50 per gallon) paint made for severe weather. (The outdoor mural I did at the shore survived Hurricane Sandy.) The paint has a 25-year warranty.
When do you expect to start?
How is the mural concept determined?
The mural concept is determined by a long series of rough thumbnail sketches ... I have received a lot of help prioritizing and getting good pictures of the old buildings and businesses (most from the 1800s) no longer standing from Nancy Schmitt at the historical society.
Some of your works make use of physical elements beyond the painting surface (like the truck tailgate/bench). Will you do anything like that in Malvern, e.g. use the windows on the wall?
Due to the large number of historical buildings I need to represent in this mural, and the scale at which I will need to paint them, I will be unable in this project to make use of the windows on the wall in the design. The lower right large double window will be covered and the shudders removed above for more space.
Anything else we should know about your work?
Feel free to let people know that I do residential work, too, at very affordable prices, I also don’t charge for consultations. (Shameless plug)
