Movie Theater Moves Closer to Closure

A recent zoning change will allow a car dealership to open at the location of East Whiteland's United Artists theater.

East Whiteland's lone movie theater moved one step closer to closure last week, as the township supervisors approved a zoning change that will allow a car dealership to open on the property.

Devon Automotive Group requested that three parcels currently occupied by United Artists East Whiteland Stadium 9 be changed from Village Mixed Use (VMX) to Frontage Commercial (FC) zoning classification.

The board of supervisors approved the change in a public hearing held Dec. 12. According to Township Manager Terry Woodman, the automotive group plans to open a Toyota dealership at the site.

luxury movie theater is due to open at the Uptown Worthington property at Routes 202 and 29 on the eastern edge of the township.

Are these these the same supervisors who approve the porn shop without knowing what they sell?

"Upscale" movie theater to open? Sounds like movies will be more expensive in an upscale venue. Remember the art deco Warner Theater in West Chester and Anthony Wayne Theater in Wayne? Now, THEY were upscale! Went to see "Lincoln" on Saturday at EW facility. Sat there entranced by its production, etc. but was distracted by vibrations and booming coming from another movie being shown somewhere in the building. They just don't make 'em (movies/theaters) like they used to!

Pity. Another car dealership adds nothing to the quality of life for the area, and who knows when a theater will go in at Uptown Worthington?

Keep voting the way you vote and you'll keep getting what you get.

I live in Lancaster county now......having lived many years in the Malvern area. I tend to visit the Exton/Downingtown movie theaters as the choices of venue are very limited.....but as I still have friends in Malvern we meet up at the East Whiteland movies! Hope this does not bcome yet another car dealership of which we seem to be over-run.

I agree. It's the last thing we need. I absolutely love that movie theater. I don't understand the decisions people are making for our community

Worthington is a pig in a poke.
A friend who lives near a car dealer in Warwick gets the pleasure of the lighting always being on 24/7 and when its open, loudspeaker announcements outdoors intended for employees. If you live near the property and have concerns you MUST make your concerns heard to the township supervisors, planning commission and zoning hearing board or be happy with what you get. Lighting and noise are a big issue for surrounding residential properties.

the zoning change gives the development "by right" usage limiting the "permissions" needed. If it was a conditional use or a zoning variance, the public could request concessions and adjustments before the actual plan is approved. With "by right"-- as in developing per the ordinance, the leverage of the residents is practically nil. Georay is right, this could be more intrusive than the theater bldg.

How many employees will the car dealer have? How much do they make? I bet it's a lot more then then high school/college kids working part time in a movie house. so do the math EWT will get more in income tax with a car dealership.

If someone lives where they have earned income tax they can get their .5% EW tax transfered to their area providing EW with nothing. Most areas charge 1%. EW could benefit from a property tax increase. Or lose. That would depend upon assessment of the new property.

how do you get the EW income tax transfered. I never heard of this. I would much rather have it go to Malvern where I live then EW.

EW tax form it asked if any payment had been made to other municipalities. I wrote in where ie. Philidelphia, and that amount that I paid to philly was applied to EW. I guess transfer are arranged by the collecting angencies. Earned income tax only. I looked online at the form Malvern uses. Enter any deductions for earned income tax for where you work on line 9. Malvern is 1% EW deduction is only .5% so you would need to pay the difference as EW doesn't deduct enough for Malvern. I am not an accountant, but I believe this is correct.
