Sobering Statistics Regarding Students

The schools budget discussion included a by-the-numbers look at student well-being in the district.

At a recent Great Valley School District Board meeting, Jane Trimble, the student services coordinator, explained the level of activity in her department.

"I can tell you we have a steady stream of students through student services on any given day, between 10 to 20," Trimble said.

Here are the statistics she supplied to the board for the 2011-12 school year as of the March 12, 2012, board meeting:

  • 20 students hospitalized for suicidal ideation and threats

  • 7 drug and alcohol screenings in middle school, 5 policy violations
  • Mike (COAD) sees 27 kids in group, 10 individually
  • Christa at the high school sees 20 kids in supportive way on regular basis, as well as 5-20 for attendance matters. She's been involved in 25 different types of crises intervention and support.

The real questions are WHY is this happening and HOW can we stop it? I know there are many of my generation out there who can't understand why teenagers are under such pressure - it certainly wasn't that way when we were that age. But these kids are under such scrutiny from their peers 24 hours a day, because of technology, and pressure from their parents, because they believe their children are the smartest and best and they have to be that way in everything, and their teachers, because they have to show statistically that they haven't left anyone behind. I highly recommend anyone with an interest in this subject go find a showing of the movie "The Race to Nowhere." These kids deserve a chance to be who they are and not be pressured into something they are not.

I encourage my children to be who they are not who I want them to be.... I do not pressure them. There is still stress despite this way of thinking. I agree some parenting styles are high stress with the expectations that are put on their children. This will come out in some way in their life.... This is a very deep subject that could be spoken about and debated pros and cons for hours.

Thank you Jane Trimble and your staff in the GVSD for helping our schools help our children. Sometimes parents dont know they need help until it is too late.... Thank you!
