Thursday in Willistown: Ponies!

Well, one pony, at least, plus other farm animals, face painters and more at the Greentree Country Fair.

Update: This event has been postponed one week due to inclement weather. It is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 25.

On Thursday, Greentree Park will fill up with farm animals and hundreds of people, as the Greentree Country Fair returns for 2011.

Visitors might also get the chance to see "cabbage the size of a toddler" or a "micro-melon," as local gardeners heed the call to the Prize Produce competition.

The fair, part of Willistown's Thrilling Third Thursdays series, will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Growers should enter their produce for competition by 6 p.m., and winners will be announced at 7 p.m.

"We had a bunch of kids enter the prize produce competition last year," parks director Mary McLoughlin said.

Among the highlights of the fair are:

  • Pony Rides
  • Face Painting
  • A petting zoo
  • Bingo
  • Community booths with local organizations*

Sponsors like Whirled Peace and Jimmy's BBQ will be on hand with food and drinks, and have pledged to donate 10 percent of their sales to the effort to bring new playground equipment to the park. That project is being headed up by Friends of Greentree Park, who will be in attendance, as well.

The petting zoo is being provided by Sleepy Hollow Ponies, goats, llamas, alpacas, chickens, sheep, bunnies and donkeys.

According to McLoughlin, the petting zoo and the face painters have been the most popular parts of the event in past years.

"There's no charge for the petting zoo or face painting," McLoughlin said. "Hopefully, people will be pitching in for the [Friends of Greentree Park] fund, and donating canned goods."

All canned goods donation will be given to the Chester County Food Bank, as part of its Food Backpack Program. For suggestions on what types of food to bring, see the second page of the PDF document attached to this article.

While the park will be filled with pettable animals, event organizers ask that folks leave their dogs home.

*Community groups represented at the fair will include:

  • Willistown Troop 78 Boy Scouts
  • Cub Scout pack 98
  • Great Valley Girl Scouts (3 troops being represented)
  • Sugartown Community Garden
  • Okehocking Nature Center
  • Malvern Library
  • Paoli Library
  • Historic Sugartown
  • Willistown Conservation Trust
  • Paoli Hospital
