When it comes to singer-songwriters, Philadelphia enjoys an embarrassment of riches - the city plays host to enough inspired artists to fill a new playlist every week of the year. One local songwriter who consistently draws praise from fans and peers, pull big crowds, and pen some of the best songs in the city is Alexandra Day. She's an operatically-trained singer and classical-caliber pianist whose music spans genres by merging jazz inflections with sultry vocal hooks. Her music can hold its own on a mix tape with Norah Jones and Diana Krall, but the carefully crafted poetry of her lyrics makes her a nearer neighbor to Fiona Apple. From unbearably giddy to heartrending, her songs wield a finely-honed emotional points - equally sharp on record or live with her solo behind a piano.

Conveniently located right next to the Berwyn train station, The Music Workshop has been open at its current location for a year under the ownership of talented guitar teacher Erik Sayles. Consistently packed with customers, the business is an instructional studio for most types of instruments, including piano, violin, keyboard, drums, guitar and bass. Students of The Music Workshop can expect to learn a wealth of knowledge and a range of skills.
