Christmas Tree Lighting Kicks off Victorian Christmas

Hundreds gather at Burke Park to join in the Christmas spirit.

Visitors to Burke Park Friday night might have felt more like they were in a story book, being surrounded by dream-like horse carriage rides, Victorian-dressed couples, Santa and his elf and, of course, a giant Christmas tree.

Victorian Christmas, which has been taking place about 10 years, drew hundreds out for the annual tree lighting Ceremony.

Pat Reeser, president of the Malvern Business and Professional Association, said the event got her in the Christmas spirit.

"I love seeing the tree lit," she said. "And all the families coming together."

Reeser's sister, Sally Cannon of West Chester, said she likes the sense of unity the event creates.

"It's nice to see the whole town come out," she said.

Rose Smith, who dressed in Victorian garb with her husband Ted, said she'd never miss the event.

"Every year it gets better," she said. "I just like to get in the spirit."

The tree lighting was aired live on NBC 10.

The annual Great Valley Middle School/High School Christmas riot is a scene to avoid. The Malvern Victorian Christmas is a wonderful and worthwhile Borough endeavor that was hijacked and ruined years ago by the hordes of screaming, shrieking, rampaging teens and pre-teens. It is now something that some business owners dread and avoid. The operation was scaled back because of the hundreds of teen and pre-teen flies that have utterly ruined the event. Well before the start of the program groups of teens start appearing in the Borough as parents dump them off and leave. Groups of males looking for fights, shrieking girls looking for action and the whole volatile mix is something to avoid. I make it a point to get out of town before the thing starts.
