Malvern Patch Asks: Hot Air Balloons Rising?

No balloons for 10 years, and then two in the past month?

Malvern Patch reader Neil recently asked via email:

This morning, a hot air balloon past just north of the Malin Station community right over rt. 202.  It was fairly low to the ground.  I did not get a picture.

However, back on September 23rd. I did get the attached shot of a hot air balloon that landed on the landfill area near Knickerbocker golf course.

I am curious to know if there is a new staging area for hot air balloons in East Whiteland.  In 10+ years of living in Malvern, I had never seen them.  It is cool to see them float by.  If I see more float by, I will take another picture.

Can anyone in readerland shed some light on this story? Is there a new staging area nearby, or have the winds been just so recently as to float the balloons toward Malvern?

The company that's flying around here is called Airventures - http://air-ventures.com/. They have two balloons they're running and one landed on our road a few weeks ago.

1. It is an election year after all. 2. With that, comes a propensity of hot air. 3. This might just provide the answer as to how to get from Point A to Point B when the new construction dust settles in beautiful downtown Malvern!

Barry DiLibero, who pilots hot air balloons out of Chester Springs (usflagballoon.com), weighed in via email: "The answer is really simple. The wind. Why? Recently there have been some fairly fast, low level winds (20-30 mph) starting just a few hundred feet above the surface and calm winds below that level. The direction has been heading towards the East, South East of the launch areas, literally blowing the balloons that way, further than normal. Most stop around Great Valley Corporate Center or Church Farm School area. This happens around the change of seasons, from Summer into Fall as the heating/cooling of the Earth and air changes more rapidly, setting up a rather quick "boundary layer" where the cool air and the warm air mix. I believe there have two or three landings over that way in the last few weeks. Enjoy the view while you can because the season is just about over and the balloons will be gone until Spring! Hope this helps."
