Route 401 to Be Closed at U.S. 202 for Bridge Repairs

The closure is related to the widening and reconstruction of the southbound side of Route 202 between Route 401 and Route 30.

The following was provided to Patch by PennDOT:

Route 401 (Conestoga Road) will be closed and detoured at the U.S. Route 202 interchange in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, from 8 p.m. Friday (June 13) to 10 a.m. Saturday (June 14) for overhead bridge construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced.

The road closure is required to allow PennDOT’s contractor to set seven concrete beams for the new southbound Route 202 bridge that is currently being built as part of the widening and reconstruction of the southbound side of Route 202 between Route 401 and Route 30.

During this overnight operation, the following detours will be in place for Route 401 travelers:

• Eastbound Route 401: Detour south on Route 202 to the Business Route 30 exit, then left on Route 30 (Lancaster Avenue), right at the ramp to Route 202 North and follow Route 202 North to the Route 401 exit; and

• Westbound Route 401: Detour north on Route 202 to the Route 29 North (Great Valley) exit, then right on Matthews Road, right on Route 29 (Morehall Road), left on Swedesford Road to the ramp to Route 202 South and follow Route 202 South to the Route 401 exit.

This overnight operation is weather dependent and may be postponed until the following evening in the event of rain.

In addition, southbound Route 202 will be reduced to a one lane between the Cedar Hollow Road overpass and Route 29 Interchange in Tredyffrin and East Whiteland townships from 8 p.m. Thursday (June 12) to 5 a.m. Friday (June 13) for concrete paving, sign installation and adjustments to construction barriers.

These operations are part of PennDOT’s $168.7 million widening and reconstruction of 6.5 miles of Route 202 to improve travel and safety between the Route 252/Swedesford Road Interchange in Tredyffrin Township and the Route 30 Interchange in East Whiteland Township.

The widening of Route 202 from north of the Route 401 Interchange to the Route 252/Swedesford Road Interchange is being performed by the Richard E. Pierson Construction Company, Inc. of Woodstown, N.J., under a $105.4 million contract. The project is scheduled to finish this fall.

Construction on Route 202 from north of Route 401 to Route 30 is being done by Allan A. Myers, LP of Worcester, Montgomery County. The $63.3 million contract is scheduled to finish in 2016.
