SPRING AWAKENING

THE BARLEY SHEAF PLAYERS PRESENT
SPRING AWAKENING
Eight-Time Tony Award-Winning Musical Receives Area
Community Theatre Premiere September 7 – 29, 2012

(Lionville, PA) – The Barley Sheaf Players present the area community theatre premiere of SPRING AWAKENING, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik. It is based on the 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. The show runs for eight performances only from September 7 – 29, 2012, at 810 N. Whitford Road, Lionville, PA. Tickets are available by visiting www.barleysheaf.org or by calling 610.363.7075.

The Tony Award-winning alternative rock musical is set in late 19th century Germany and follows a handful of angst-ridden teenagers exploring their newfound sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany due to its controversial nature which includes sometimes frank portrayals of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide, and the musical is therefore not recommended for children.

Director Rose-Marie Abi-Richa says, “I love this show so much that I have seen it six times. I was captivated with the show’s music and characters and was moved by the story line. The alternative rock score really spoke to me. I knew it would be a great show for Barley Sheaf and jumped at the chance to direct it when the rights became available. I am honored that this is the area’s community theatre premiere and look forward to sharing SPRING AWAKENING with our audiences.”
