Rockers Wanted for Malvern Memorial Parade

Two one-hour-long slots are open for interested local garage bands.

The annual is slated for Sunday, June 3, 2012, and organizers are once again looking for bands to perform during the accompanying Family Fun Day.

Local garage bands, especially those with younger members, are invited to apply to perform in Memorial Park. There are two sets available; one before the parade 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and another from about 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Last year was the first to include the Family Fun Day Festivities in addition to the parade. Organizers are planning an even bigger event for 2012, with a Revolutionary War encampment and demonstration, plus a smaller number of bands performing longer sets.

"Last year the addition of the Run for Freedom and the Family Fun Day activities in Monument Park were a big hit. We continue to encourage more organizations in Malvern to be part of day’s events" Rich Lee, one of the organizers, said. "The Mothers Club will again sponsor a donation drive for the troops and the day will start with the second annual 5K Run for Freedom and Kids Run, benefiting the Chester County Hero’s Fund. There will be lots of food vendors and a farmers market in the park all afternoon; and of course the ever popular Community Cake Walk. Plus, the Chester Valley Little League will sponsor field games before and after the Parade, also in the Park."

In more than 20 years helping to run the parade, Lee said the planning committee has tried many ways to draw people to the park in the afternoon.

"It seems like we may have finally hit on a winning formula. In the past it was common to watch the parade along Monument or King Street and then go back home," he said.

There are no strict rules for what types of bands can apply, but Lee said it would be good to have a rock band the kids would like to hear.

Bands are asked to contact Lee as soon as possible to volunteer for the opportunity to play. Electricity and shelter will be available. Each band will likely be able to play about an hour set. One band will perform before the parade begins, and other will take the stage after. Contact information is available in the Patch , and other details are available on the event website and Facebook page.
