Newbury Gifts to Close in May

'The economy helped make the decision,' the owner said.

Newbury Gifts in Frazer Shopping Center will close its doors in May, according to store owner Judy Cady.

Cady said she decided to close the store, which sells items like baby gifts, handbags, candles and figurines, due to the slow economy.

"I'm retiring, actually. But the economy helped make the decision," Cady said.

Cady, who lives near Immaculata University, opened Newbury Gifts in 2005. Before that, she had owned a maternity shop in Paoli, Special Delivery, before taking several years off from the retail business to raise her children.

Newbury Gifts tied with The Picket Fence for "Best Gift Shop" in Malvern Patch's 2012 Readers Choice awards.

The store will keep its regular hours—10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday—until at least May 4. After that, she'll probably keep the door open for limited hours for another week as she packs up the shop.

Cady said everything in the store is marked down at least 40 percent, and some items as much as 75 percent. Whatever doesn't sell, she'll take to local consignment stores.
