A Few Tips for Weathering the Heat Wave

The American Red Cross provides tips on how to battle the heat wave.

Patch's own weather guru, Tom Thunstrom of Phillyweather.net a heat wave was on its way to this area. With temperatures rising to the 100s, it is best to get prepared by filling yourself up with knowledge about heat waves and what to do when they come to town.

The American Red Cross released a list for heat wave help and awareness. So, without further ado, here is your double whammy 5 Things for this week.

5 Things To Know for Heat Wave Preparation

1. Animal lovers: "Ensure that your animals’ needs for water and shade are met."

2.Deprived of AC? "If you do not have air conditioning, choose places you could go to for relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day (schools, libraries, theaters, malls)." 

3. Be a Good Samaritan: "Know those in your neighborhood who are elderly, young, sick or overweight. They are more likely to become victims of excessive heat and may need help."

4. Oh no! Lights out! "Check the contents of your emergency preparedness kit in case a power outage occurs." 

5. Family communications: "Discuss heat safety precautions with members of your household. Have a plan for wherever you spend time— home, work and school—and prepare for the possibility of power outages."

5 Things To Do During a Heat Wave

1. Working in the sun? "Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors and use a buddy system when working in
excessive heat."

2. Playing outside? "Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. If it gets too hot, postpone outdoor games and activities."

3. Dress to impress? Eh, maybe: "Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light- colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays."

4. Healthy eating = fun in the sun: "Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Also, eat small meals and eat more often."

5. Stay tune: "Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS)."
