Code Orange Returns, Severe Thunderstorms Possible

Lightning and 40 mph winds are possible Thursday night, and air quality could pose a hazard for people with health conditions.

That National Weather Service is advising that the Malvern area could see severe thunderstorms tonight, and more milder thunderstorms over the next six days.

According to the NWS' severe weather outlook, this evening the region could experience:

... isolated strong thunderstorms with a short burst of heavy rain [and] frequent lightning strikes and gusty winds to 40 mph.

The next six days might bring scattered thunderstorms, but they should only cause problems in areas with poor drainage systems.

In addition to the possible severe weather, the "code orange" weather alert is still in effect today.

According to the alert:

A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations with the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. ... The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors.

Sensitive groups include:

  • children
  • the elderly
  • people suffering from asthma
  • people suffering from heart disease
  • people suffering from lung diseases
