May Events: Broad Street Run, Devon Horse Show and More

Also: a community festival in Mt. Airy, a run in Kennett Square and the biggest college boat race in the country.

Looking for something to do in May? Here's what's happening in the Greater Philadelphia Area:

May 4-5: Strawberry Festival at Peddler’s Village

Where: Peddler’s Village, Newtown
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What: Featuring artisans, live music, shops and more Strawberries than any one person can handle in a given sitting, the Peddler’s Village Strawberry Festival is the place to go to celebrate spring (and enter a strawberry pie-eating contest). 

Cost: Free admission and parking.

May 4: Mt. Airy Day

Where: Cliveden of the National Trust, 6400 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia
When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Celebrate Northwest Philadelphia with this outdoor festival, which will feature vendors, artists, shopping, games for children, food and live music from Mt. Airy-based performers and beyond. A full list of the musical acts is on the event's website.

May 5: Broad Street Run

Where: The length of Broad Street in Philadelphia, from Olney Avenue to the Navy Yard
When: The race starts at 8:30 a.m.

What: It’s hard to imagine there is a Greater Philadelphia resident out there who isn’t aware of the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, a 10-mile race down the middle of Philadelphia. If you want to run, you’ve missed your chance by about four months but a guide for spectators is available on its site here. The city announced that security is going to be increased for the race.

May 5: Malvern Family Fest

Where: Samuel & M. Elizabeth Burke Park, Malvern
When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: 

The May festival promises the following, according to Malvern's Business & Professional Association website:

"Street festival highlighting Malvern’s uniqueness as a destination for dining and shopping in a family-friendly environment. Over 150 artists and craftspeople, farmer’s market, antiques, KidZone with an assortment of children’s activities, a food court, lots of live music and more."

May 10-11: Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta

Where: Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive, Philadelphia
When: May 10-11, times vary

What: The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the country, with more than 100 schools from across North America participating. Watch the boat races along scenic Kelly Drive in Philadelphia, or at least know the stay away from that road if you are driving.

Cost: Free to watch 

May 11: Veteran’s Day Memorial Dedication

Where: Alice Grim Boulevard and West Chester Pike, Newtown Square
When: 11 a.m.

What: After months of construction, Delaware County is going to dedicate its Veteran’s Memorial in Newtown Square. Speakers will include Rep. Patrick Meehan, Gov. Tom Corbett and former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge.

Cost: Free

May 18: The Kennett Run

Where: 300 Exelon Way, Kennett Square
When: Get a full rundown of the schedule here

What: If you couldn’t get into the Broad Street Run, the Kennett Run might be for you. The race, which includes a 10k, a 5k and a fun-run, brought more than $90 to the Kennett area in 2012. Registration is open until May 15.

May 19: The Clover Market 

Where: Ardmore
When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: Ardmore’s spring and summer open-air market is back in May. More than 100 vendors from the Greater Philadelphia area are slated to be on hand, selling everything from home goods to jewelry. Check out its website for more information.

May 23: The Devon Horse Show

Where: 23 Dorset Rd., Devon
When: May 23 to June 2, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

What: Besides featuring various equestrian exhibitions and competitions, vendors from around the Main Line, arts, shopping and food, the Devon Horse Show and County Fair is the Main Line’s number one location for giant hats. Learn more about this historic, annual event on its homepage.
