One story, as reported in the American Republican (November 28, 1821), told of a stolen horse on the night of the "22d inst. from the tongue of a wagen [sic] at John Templeton's tavern [then tavern keeper].  John Habecker, the horse owner, offered a $20 reward for its return and for bringing the thief to justice.  A February 9, 1825 article advertises "Republican Artillerists" to assemble at the "Samuel Ogdens [then tavern keeper], sign of the Gen.
