King of Prussia -- Construction to widen and improve Route 202 in East Whiteland and Tredyffrin townships, Chester County, will require nighttime lane closures next week (Aug. 15-18) between the Route 401 and Chesterbrook interchanges for road construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today.

PennDOT is widening and rebuilding Route 202’s northbound lanes as the first stage of a $105.4 million project to add a third travel lane in each direction from just north of the Route 401 Interchange to just south of the Chesterbrook Interchange.

Northbound Route 202 will be reduced from two lanes to one on Wednesday and Thursday (Aug. 15-16) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, and on Saturday (Aug. 18) from 12 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Crews will move construction barriers, eradicate traffic lines and paint new lines, and begin preparations for placing new concrete on the widened northbound side of the highway. The upcoming construction schedule is weather dependent.

The contractor plans to work at night over the next few months to place the majority of the new concrete pavement on the widened northbound side of the highway because temperatures will be cooler and concrete delivery trucks are less likely to encounter traffic delays.

Richard E. Pierson Construction Company, Inc. of Woodstown, N.J. is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel during construction. The posted speed limit in the Route 202 construction zone is 45 miles per hour.

PennDOT is rebuilding and expanding 6.5 miles of Route 202 from just south of the Chesterbrook Interchange to the Route 30/Exton Bypass Interchange under two construction contracts. The second contract, which runs from just north of the Route 401 Interchange to the Route 30/Exton Bypass Interchange, is scheduled to start in 2013.
