Saturday Night: Clear Skies and a Giant Moon

A rare confluence of factors will make the moon look bigger than usual.

Saturday night, the moon will appear larger than any other night in the last 18 years.

This type of moon, known as a "super perigee" occurs when the moon is full phase—reflecting the maximum amount of light from the sun—and also at the closest point of its orbit to Earth.

The National Weather Service predicts the sky should be mostly clear, so viewing should be easy.

For the best perspective, look to the east at sunset. According to NASA's press release, it's easiest to discern the size difference when the moon is behind or close to terrestrial objects, which is why it's best to check it out early while it's close to the horizon.
