Valley Hill Road to Close Monday for Months-Long Bridge Replacement

The Charlestown bridge will be demolished and rebuilt as the Pennsylvania Turnpike is widened to six lanes.

A portion of Valley Hill Road in Charlestown Township will close Monday as the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission prepares to demolish and rebuild the bridge spanning the I-76.

The work will be done by West Chester-based contractor Road-Con Inc., and is expected to take until November, according to the PTC:

Locally, on March 11, Valley Hill Road will be closed and traffic detoured between Yellow Springs Road and Conestoga Road (State Route 401) from March through November. Detour signs will be posted along the detour route; passenger and commercial vehicles will be directed over Conestoga Road (State Route 401), Seven Oaks Road and Yellow Springs Road to Valley Hill Road (approximately 4 miles). Local access on Valley Hill Road will be available to and from either direction to the bridge while the detour is in place.

The bridge will be closed to accomodate a project to widen and improve the turnpike:

This project involves a full-depth total reconstruction of six miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Upon completion, the existing four-lane roadway with a 10-foot median and 12-foot shoulder will be converted into a six-lane facility with three 12-foot travel lanes each direction, a 26-foot median and 12-foot shoulder.
This project also includes the replacement of two overhead bridges, seven mainline bridges, lengthening of culverts, construction of sound barriers and the construction of stormwater management facilities and other drainage improvements at various locations throughout the project limits. The final design phase is targeted for completion in 2012.
