Weather: Temperatures Will Climb To 80s This Week

The area is in for rising temps and periods of humidity, according to Phillyweather.net's Tom Thunstrom.

We’re warming up for more than one day this week.

Spring has been one giant tease so far—days of chill, some with rain, followed by one surge of warmth, then rinse and repeat for maximum impact and loathing. That’s about to end though as we get a “taste of summer” the next few days … April style.

No, I’m not forecasting 90 degrees and suffocating humidity, but I’m predicting at least one 80-degree day between today and Wednesday, along with some humidity as a Bermuda High flexes in the Western Atlantic.

That pesky warm front that’s been lurking around since Friday night will lift through and far enough to our north to allow humid southwesterly breezes to flow northeast through the mid-Atlantic. Dew points will likely nudge the 60-degree mark as it feels “humid” out from time to time.

More impressively, temperatures will approach or exceed 80 anytime through Wednesday. Yes, this is our first sustained warm trend of the year so far, and one that will send many scurrying for the golf courses, tissues and bike paths around the region.

While the warm front slowly lifts north early this week, thunderstorm threats are around for later today as a weak low rides the warm front. Scattered thunder chances can’t be ruled out on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon in the warmth and increased humidity, but most of those two days should be nice.

The “taste of summer” ends abruptly on Thursday as a cold front slices into that Bermuda High, with a potential severe weather outbreak in the cards as a strong storm organizes in the Ohio Valley and lifts through the northeast, dragging a cold front behind it.

Thursday afternoon could be particularly rough if computer model indications pan out as thunderstorms fire along the front and march east, bringing an end to our warmth (for a while). The end of the week looks more “typical” of typical April weather—cooler but not terribly cold. We should be able to avoid gloomy rains for next weekend if trends hold.

For those keeping track, the last time we were above 80 on consecutive days in this area was Sept. 24-25, with Sept. 24 our last foray into the 90s in the region (the high was 91 in Pottstown that day). We likely won’t hit 90 in this warm stretch but if everything breaks right we get a couple of 80s out of it.
