Recent Flooding Highlights the Importance of Personal Disaster Preparedness

Recent rain storms dumped over five inches of rain on parts of Chester County.  It’s no secret that severe weather events seem to be happening more frequently, often taxing local emergency response personnel to their limits.

How can you help to reduce the impact on emergency service personnel and at the same time increase level of safety for you and your family?  Here are a few tips to get you started:

-ReadyNotifyPA: The Southeastern Regional Task Force (SEPARTF) provides an emergency notification service free of charge.  Once registered, the service sends local alerts about severe weather, emergencies, and road closures to cell phones and email addresses.  You have the ability to choose what information you would like sent to your communication devices.

-Turn Around, Don’t Drown (TADD)! Flooding conditions on our roadways are serious situations.  Driving your vehicle into flooded areas jeopardizes your safety and the safety of emergency responders.  On flooded roads, as little as 6 inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or truck; 2 feet of water will carry most vehicles, including SUVs.  If there is moving water on the road, find another route.  Vehicle operators in Pennsylvania also face fines of up to $250 and two points on their licenses for failure to observe warning signs that close roadways due to hazardous conditions!

-Personal Safety and Survival Kit: Be prepared by creating a personal safety and survival kit that contains the things you might need in the event of an emergency or disaster.  The American Red Cross is a great resource for information about personal safety, what you should put in your survival kit, and resources that are available to assist you in the event you need them.

Emergencies and disasters happen.  Being properly prepared for them is key to “weathering” their effects more easily!
