Conestoga Crew Club Takes Home the Gold From 2014 Cooper Cup Regatta

Conestoga Crew Club had a strong showing with thrilling results in the Cooper Cup Regatta held Sunday, April 28th, on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey.  Over fifty high school and club teams from seven states and the District of Columbia participated with 390 boats competing in breezy but pleasant spring conditions.  Conestoga dominated the sculling events with eleven top three finishes, including nine 1st place victories, one 2nd place finish and one 3rd place finish.

First place victories at the Cooper Cup went to Conestoga in the Womens Lightweight Varsity Double (Katie Groves; Sophie Bodek), Womens Varsity Double (Rachel Devlin and Annina Ruggirello), Womens Novice Quad (Laura Alcorn; Lilianne Brown; Kate Hudson and Sydney Stephans), Womens Varsity Quad (Annie Graf; Caroline Gosnear; Emer Ryle and Meagan Hudson), Womens JV Quad (Madeline Beirne; Carly Robins, Emily Hompe and Angela Sarkisian), Mens Novice Quad (Max Amsterdam; Griffin Hamilton; Michael Gregory and Matt Balch), Mens Varsity Quad (Niall Carlson; Nathan Leibowitz; Jake Novak and Sean Pepin), Mens Novice Double (Jack Corr and Julius Neubig) and Mens JV Quad (Max Malarkey; Ryan Hollinger, Micky Kling and Hanan Zisling).

 Also contributing to Conestoga’s impressive day, the Womens JV Double (Amy Connell and Anna Zibinski) raced to a 2nd place finish and Mens Varsity Single (Andy Backstrom) came home with a 3rd place finish.  In the Womens Varsity Double, Rebecca Simmonetti, returning from a season long injury, rowed with senior Sarah Thomas, to a well raced 4th place finish.  Also competing on Sunday for Conestoga were Tyler Simpson and Andrey Lanahan in the Mens Varsity Double and Sam Caplan in the Men’s JV Single.
