Immaculata University Lego Project

I am Jacqueline Jewell, a junior at Immaculata University, a small Roman Catholic university located on the Mainline approximately an hour or so from downtown Philadelphia. I am enrolled in COM 230 Global Media where we examine the role of communication media in the context of changing global realities. We have reviewed McDonald's commercials from around the world at the local McDonalds. We have read the "Good Earth" and then visited Pearl S. Buck Foundation. We have eaten and reported about ethnic restaurants in the Malvern area. We are to visit the United Nations next month. Yesterday, we were to build something from 20 Lego pieces and tie the effort to our Own Personal Legend, as described in Paulo Coelho's classic tale "The Alchemist".
I built a person flying on the head of an airplane because it symbolizes my flight into maturity; the big risk I'm taking to leap for my dreams, and hopefully soar consistently into contentment. My Lego person looks like a sasquatch like from Big Foot so I called it Sachy. I think it does pertain to me because sometimes I do feel like my goals are only a theory and I am too different-the odd ball out, but then I realize that I should embrace those qualities because that's what makes me me, and I shouldn't give up on my dreams of becoming a writer. In the Alchemist, Santiago is lost and sometimes has doubt in his destiny as if something were missing in his life-I can relate. Sometimes I feel lost and don't know where I stand in life. After thinking about it for awhile I decided what my personal legend would be. I think my personal legend is to change for the better, to become wiser, more giving, to learn and acknowledge my mistakes, to give advice, help others, spread my wisdom, help myself and others grow. I think I'm supposed to conquer obstacles and tribulations. My personal legend was to become a mother, a writer, make some kind of positive difference in the world even if it's miniscule. To write beautiful words that inspire. To make human connections. To love and cry. To live life for as long as I can with the ones I love and leave my mark.
My own childhood memory of the Legos was building them with my little brothers and imagining the possibilites of what we can create with these simple but complicated toys. This was an excellent project and I hope everyone has come to understand the meaning behind it. We all have something we are destined for. Thank you.
