Township Manager Hugh Murray Retiring After 42 Years

Murray, who served as Willistown Police Chief for 33 years and then township manager for nearly nine years, will retire when his successor has been found.

Willistown Township Manager and former Police Chief Hugh Murray has announced his intention to retire in 2012, after 42 years working for the township.

Murray served in the US Air Force for five years before joining the . His first day on the job was Halloween, 1969. He left the department as chief 33 years later and became township manager in 2003, according to the township newsletter delivered this week.

In the cover article, he commends the involved residents, the dedicated township employees and the current board, and in particular his old department.

"I can't begin to thank everyone who has helped me since I came here as a young rookie cop in 1969," he adds. "And of course my heart will always remain with the Willistown Police Department. It's one of the best, if not the best, in the state."

Murray will stay until a new township manager has been hired, but expects to be fully retired by April 2012. He and his wife, Ginny, plan to move to Cape May, N.J.
