Malvern Borough Council released the following statement Tuesday evening, regarding the :

For several months, Borough Council has been engaged in an evaluation of our police department, as well as the manner in which we provide public safety protection to our residents, business owners and visitors. During that time, we have explored many options and possible scenarios with the goal of providing the best possible services to the Borough.  As part of this evaluation, we received comments from residents and business owners within the Borough as well.  The common theme of much of the public comments were that members of the public appreciated and valued having a localized police department.

Borough Council has concluded that an immediate change in leadership is necessary within the Police Department.  Accordingly, effective immediately Michael McMahon will no longer serve as the Chief of Police within the Borough.  During his tenure, Chief McMahon served honorably and tirelessly for nearly eleven years.  Borough Council greatly appreciates his efforts in heading its police department during this time, and Council wishes him the best for the future.

Chief McMahon's departure created for the Borough the issue of who would lead the Department going forward.  As a result, Malvern Borough will be contracting with East Whiteland Township to provide an interim Chief of Police, Mark Ercole, initially for a term of one year.  Mark Ercole is a lieutenant in East Whiteland's police department and has extensive managerial, supervisory and general police experience.  Borough Council is pleased to obtain someone with the experience that Lieutenant Ercole provides, as well as the existing knowledge of the Borough.  Borough Council believes that Lieutenant Ercole will provide excellent leadership to the existing members of our police Department and his arrival places our department in good hands.
