Borough to Amend Ordinances on Murals, Alleys

The change comes as the Malvern Community Arts Project group plans multiple murals in town.

A spate of planned new murals in Malvern Borough has Borough Council considering new language for its commercial signage ordinance.

The addendum would set conditions for outdoor murals—allowing art that promotes community, but not those that would promote a specific business. 

The council is expected to vote April 16 to add the following language to Section 2604-B, Signs in Commercial and Industrial Districts:

8. Community-based Outdoor Murals.  With the approval of Borough Council, community-based outdoor murals painted on building surfaces, provided that they do not relate specific information about the use of the building or the products sold and that do not promote or benefit any specific business, but are for the benefit of the community as a whole, such as murals depicting the history of the community, notable people or events, or to promote the community.

A second change, also up for adoption on April 16, would correct a typo in the borough code regarding alleys (Section 508), which currently reads as:

"Alleys, where permitted or required, shall have a minimum right-of-way width of twenty (25) feet."

The parenthetical portion will be changed to say "width of twenty (20) feet."
