Tredyffrin Township has received a $564,978 grant to install new "adaptive traffic signal controls" along Route 30.

The traffic signals "control technology adjusts the timing of signaled traffic lights to accommodate changing traffic patterns and ease traffic congestion."

The grant is to install signals at eight locations near the intersection of Lancaster Avenue and Route 252.

“The goal is to improve safety at some of the most dangerous intersections in our community,” said Rep. Warren Kampf (R-157). “This system will improve our quality of life and reduce collisions as it has in other communities in the commonwealth.”

The state Department of Transportation distributed some $22.8 million in grants to install such signals as part of the Red Light Enforcement Program.

“Since its inception in 2004, the Red Light Enforcement Program has saved lives, reduced collision-related injuries, and property damage all while improving pedestrian safety,” Kampf said.  “I know Tredyffrin will benefit from this.”

Though Tredyffrin has been awarded a grant to install the red-light signals, it has not said yet whether it will do so, Kampf's office said.

Counterintuitively, red light cameras have been shown to increase traffic accidents at intersections where they are installed. People slam on their brakes unexpectedly in an effort not to clear the intersection on a yellow light - which earns you a ticket and a fine sent in the mail. Red light cameras are a complete waste of taxpayer dollars and a negative influence on traffic safety.
