No-Charge Recycling for Tires, Freezers, Electronics on Saturday in Willistown

Most metal items will be accepted and Freon will be removed free of charge.

Stuck with an old fridge? A broken lawn mower? Dead batteries? Willistown's 11th Annual Township Drop-Off Recycling Event takes place tomorrow, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Willistown Township Building.

Residents can drop off most metal items (see exceptions, below), most tires (except for large truck tires), batteries, and items containing Freon. Hazardous materials will not be accepted.

Willistown Township will accept the following items on Saturday, free of charge, according to a Township press release:

  • All computer monitors and peripherals: keyboards, CPUs, printers, modems, scanners, servers, terminals, network equipment, speakers, mouses, tubes, printer cartridges (ink jet, laser, toner), videotapes, audiotapes, and computer disks
  • Most electronic devices and accessories such as fax and copying machines, typewriters, telephones, tape recorders, VCRs, CD and DVD players, record players, tuners, amplifiers, cameras, projectors, audio and music equipment, speakers, test equipment, transformers, videotape recorders, antennae, cables, wire and circuit boards
  • Television sets, including plasma TVs, radios, stereos and radio/TV tubes
  • Household appliances/items such as: irons, toasters, microwave ovens, mixers, blenders, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, electric cooking pans/pots, lamps, clocks, kitchen ovens, cooking ranges, outdoor grills (if clean), dishwashers, clothes washers/dryers and water heaters.
  • Metal items (any type), including bedsprings, bed frames, lawn mowers (push and rider; oil and batteries must be removed), gym equipment, auto wheels, doorknobs, shelving, kitchen utensils, toys, kitchen cabinets, metal furniture, pipes, wire, etc. If it’s metal, it will be accepted (see list of exceptions).
  • Items containing Freon, such as refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air-conditioning units. Freon will be removed free of charge, representing a savings of $60/item.
  • Tires, on or off the rim. There will be an enforced limit of six (6) automobile tires per carload.
  • Batteries, including lawn mower, auto, and boat batteries (if removed); rechargeable household batteries (NiCad, Lithium ion)
  • Propane tanks
  • Cell phones (the Township will remove Sim cards)
  • Lightbulbs, including fluorescent (tubular) and compact fluorescent light bulbs & incandescent bulbs

The following are exceptions to what will be accepted:

  • Chemicals, paints, oils, gasoline or other hazardous waste will not be accepted.
  • Upholstered furniture containing a small amount of metal will not be accepted. The metal, if removed, will be accepted.
  • No mattresses or sneakers.
  • Truck tires larger than 16.5 inches in rim diameter must be off the rim or they will not be accepted.

Free document shredding will also be available next door at St. Francis in the Fields Church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any kind of sensitive documents will be accepted, but no more than five boxes will be accepted for shredding.

Standard paper clips and rubber bands do not need to be removed, but do not bring:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Cardboard
  • Wallpaper
  • Books
  • Pendaflex folders with metal strips inserted or three-ring binders
  • Items in plastic shirts/sleeves
