GVMS Solar Panels Nearing 100,000 Kilowatt Hours Produced

The panels were installed on the middle school's roof in December 2010.

The solar panel array that was installed atop Great Valley Middle School late last year will soon reach a new milestone. The array will roll over to 100,000 kilowatt hours produced since being activated Dec. 22, 2010.

The alternative energy translates to about $12,000 saved by the school. In carbon footprint terms, that's about 115,000 tons of CO2 avoided.

A half-million dollar Energy Harvest Grant helped to make the installation a reality. The district may be able to Solar Renewable Energy Certificates, which, combined with the utility bill savings, could mean the array pays for itself in about six years, according to district business manager Chuck Linderman.
