GVSD Buses: To San Francisco, Daily

At the Sept. 10 Great Valley School Board work session, district business director Chuck Linderman gave a brief presentation on the district's bussing program.

Here are some of the facts and figures from the presentation:

• Great Valley buses travel about 4,210 miles each day—the equivalent of one bus traveling to San Francisco, CA, and more than half the way back.
• For students being transported to district elementary schools, ride time ranges from 10 to 53 minutes. For GVMS and GVHS students, the ride ranges from 15 to 65 minutes.
• Great Valley is required to transport students to private and parochial schools within a 10-mile radius.  
• Great Valley buses to the six GVSD schools and 1,000 students to nonpublic schools.
• GVSD buses 157 special needs, charter school and technical school students.
• The district uses three transfer points: General Wayne Elementary, Great Valley High School and St. Patrick Catholic School. The 539 students who use these transfer stations are allowed to wait on the bus.
• 138 students in the district attend St. Patrick School, the most of any private school.
• All 49 buses in the district fleet are on the road at 6:30 a.m.
• "Busing is a thankless job, because everybody wants to be picked up and taken right to school," Linderman said, but the transportation department has done "a great job."
