Saint Patrick Wins Appeal, Merger Is Off

The Malvern Borough grade school was slated to merge with St. Monica School of Berwyn, but the Archdiocese has reportedly reversed that decision.

The planned merger of St. Patrick School in Malvern and St. Monica in Berwyn is off, according to a letter sent from the St. Monica pastor.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia had planned to merge the schools into a new school, called Malvern Catholic Regional School, housed on the current St. Patrick campus. Saint Patrick appealed the decision.

According to a letter St. Monica pastor William Trader sent to parishioners, the Archdiocese granted the appeal and reversed its decision. Tredyffrin-Easttown Patch broke the story Thursday evening—St. Patrick will stay open and St. Monica will close.

A link to Trader's letter was posted on the St. Monica Facebook page. In it, Trader explained that he heard the news directly from Archbishop Charles Chaput:

This evening, the Archbishop telephoned to inform me that Saint Patrick's School would remain a parish school. The children attending Saint Monica's School are free to attend any Catholic Parish School of their choosing.

The faculty and administration have been informed that they will be able to apply for any open teaching or administrative position in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I will be calling a meeting of the leadership of the Parish - Pastoral Council, Finance Council and the Home and School Association - to assist in the placement and support of our school families.
