Malvern Prep Teacher Profiled by Sports Illustrated

Chic Kelly, a quadriplegic for 23 years, is hoping to receive a bump in his insurance payments to match his growing needs.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Sports Illustrated's profile of Chic Kelly, a teacher and alum who has been a quadriplegic since college.

A remarkably upbeat fellow, Kelly describes himself as an "average single guy in America," except for the wheelchair he's been in for 23 years. He was injured playing hockey as a freshman at Merrimack College.

In the decades since the injury, his family has been helping him get around, especially his mother, Fran Kelly. But they know that as his parents age, he'll require outside assistance.

Kelly's hope—and SI writer Peter Richmond's goal—is for the NCAA to increase the insurance payments he receives to allow him to continue living the life he loves.

The $30,000 insurance policy pays for only a third of his home nursing care. His parents, now both 67, are out of work. His siblings have families of their own. He is asking for the $100,000 annually that the NCAA has given its catastrophic-injury victims since 1995.
