GV Boys Win, Girls Lose in Track Against Rustin

Caroline Moyer, Chucky Showers win two events apiece in split with the Golden Knights.

The start of the Ches-Mont League American Division track and field season was a mixed one for Great Valley. The boys squad defeated West Chester Rustin, 111-39, while the girls lost to the Golden Knights 82.33 to 67.67.

  • 100-meter dash: Chucky Showers outran WCR's Tom Brown by a time of 11.94 to 11.99 seconds.
  • 1600-meter run: Matt Willig posted a 435.096 to Rustin's Bob Wolfe's 440.09.
  • 400-meter dash: Demetrius McCary finished in 51.35 ahead of Tom Brooke's 53.64 for Rustin.
  • 800-meter run: Willig's 2:01.49 bested Wolfe's 2:05.00.
  • 200-meter dash: Showers won his second event, racing past teammate McCary, 23.61 to 23.80.
  • 3200-meter run: Joe Toole was tops in 10:26.11, ahead of fellow Patriot Garrett Zatlin's 10:28.40.
  • Shotput: A throw of 39 feet, 4 inches by Riley McGhee was first, and second also went to GV by Prabhat Kumar, with a 38 feet, 3 inch toss.
  • Discus: Kumar was the winner with a 125 feet, 8 inch throw, and Josh Street of GV took second with a 105 feet, 7 inches.
  • Triple jump: Jason Fernandez was tops with 39.8 to Rustin's Hank Zodais's 39.3.
  • High jump: Elon Rembert won with a 5 feet, 8 inch jump; second also went to GV's Mike Kereda's 5 feet, 4 inch toss.
  • Great Valley also won the 3200 medley relay with a time of 8:57.35, the 400-meter relay in 49.77 and the 1600 relay with a  3:36.41.

Winners for the girls match for Great Valley were:

  • 100/110 hurdles: Laura Morabito's 17.47 seconds bested Rustin's Shanel White's 18.94.
  • 1600-meter run: Caroline Moyer posted a 542.02 for first, and teammate Nicole Hajnik was right behind her in 543.40
  • 800-meter run: Sarah Kochinsky posted a 2:28.22 time to win, and fellow Patriot Hajnik was second in 2:32.55.
  • 3200-meter run: Moyer was first again, in 27.14 to top Rustin's Hannah Bangany's 28.23.
  • Javelin: Rebecca Fifer's throw of 93 feet, 11 inches topped Kathy Claugh of Rustin's 87 feet, 7 inches.
  • Pole vault: Caroline Levi's vault of 8 feet was a foot better than WCR's Carol Carfugno's 7 foot finish.
  • The Patriots were victorious in the 1600-meter relay, and also took first in the 3200-meter relay in 10:46.06.

Great Valley will spend this weekend at the Captain's Classic at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., host Oxford on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. then travel to Coatesville next Saturday for the Coaches Association Spring Classic starting at 10 a.m.
