Hurricanes Hope History Will Repeat Itself Wednesday

Villa Maria faces Allentown CC in AAA state play; knocked Vikettes out last season on buzzer-beater

Villa Maria hopes history is about to repeat itself on Wednesday night. Although this time around, they'd like to make the result a little easier.

A year ago, the Hurricanes faced off against Allentown Central Catholic in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA AAA state girls basketball tournament. The result was a buzzer-beating shot by Brooke Angelos for a 38-37 win that ended the Vikettes season and pushed Villa into the semi-final round.

The two hoop powers will meet once again in a second-round game Wednesday at Council Rock South High School at 6 p.m. with the same goal—continue play and avoid the end of the 2010-2011 season.

Villa (21-5) defeated Kennard-Dale of York County last Saturday, 54-39, to reach Wednesday's contest while ACC handled Milton of District 4, 35-21. The two teams met during the regular season in Malvern with Villa taking a 49-36 win.

The Vikettes are 23-4 and the second seed from District 11. Coached by Mike Kopp, the top girls basketball coach in Pennsylvania with over 800 victories, Allentown CC averages 44.4 points per game.

Starters include 6'0" junior forward Jenna Kocsis, 5'5" junior guard Abigail Guman, 5'5" senior guard Haley Smith, 5'9" junior forward Casey Hollawell and 6'1" junior forward Kerry Kinek. Kinek scored 16 points against Milton last Saturday, a game that was decided in the second half when the Vikettes went on a 13-0 run.

Villa will start Angelos (senior 5'7" guard), Kristen Walheim (6'0" junior forward), Kellie O'Rourke (5'8" junior guard), Maddie McTigue (5'10" junior forward) and Lisa Mirarchi (5'7" sophomore forward). The Hurricanes have been hitting the basket at a 48.9-points-per-game average and, despite a second quarter lull against Kennard-Dale, kicked things into high gear in the fourth quarter to control the game.

The game's winner will move on to the quarterfinals on Saturday against the survivor of Holy Redeemer of District 2 and Archbishop Wood of the Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12.
