Villa Takes First Step Toward State Hoop Title on Saturday

The Hurricanes will battle a York County team that features two 400-point scorers at Wissahickon.

's basketball team begins the final steps toward a possible state title with the start of the PIAA AAA tournament on Saturday. The Hurricanes will face Kennard-Dale High at Wissahickon at 3 p.m.

Villa (20-5) comes into the contest as the District 1 AAA champion, while the Rams (18-9) are the fifth seed from District 3.

The Hurricanes have been firing on all cylinders of late, cruising through the district playoffs with a team that starts just one senior. Kathy McCartney's squad, ranked 11th in the state by MaxPreps, a high school sports website, has averaged  46.7 points per game this season while limiting opponents to 40.4 points.

McCartney's starters include:

  • Brooke Angelos, 5'7" senior guard
  • Kellie O'Rourke 5'8" junior guard
  • Maddie McTigue 5'10" junior forward
  • Kristen Walheim 6'0" junior forward
  • Lisa Mirarchi 5'7" sophomore guard

While Kennard-Dale, which is located in Fawns Grove of York County, has had an up-and-down season, they do feature two players who have scored 400 points each in 6'0" senior Devon O'Kane and 5'7" senior guard/forward Carley Talbet. Jess Myers (6'0" sophomore guard), Kelsey Stanley (5'5" senior guard) and Cayley Mcclean (5'9" senior forward) round out the starting unit.

As a team, the Rams have averaged 50.4 points per game and have won 11 of their last 15. Kennard-Dale went just 5-4 during its York-Adams 2 League schedule but has played well in the past week to get the fifth seed for the district.

The winner of Saturday's contest will take on either Allentown Central Catholic or Milton on Wednesday in round two of states.

Take the Pennsylvania Turmpike eastbound and exit at Fort Washington. Bear right onto Route 309 North and exit at Highland Avenue. Turn left onto Highland. Follow for 1 mile and turn right onto South Bethlehem Pike. Follow another mile to East Mount Pleasant Ave. and turn left. Follow to third right, which is Knight Road, and turn right. School is on the right.
