What Are the Ingredients of a Great 5k?
Water, hills, mile markers—what makes a good run?
Around 8:30 a.m. on July 4, I was in desperate circumstances. I was sweating profusely, my muscles ached, and my lungs burned. I felt dehydrated but was not concerned about any of my symptoms. After all, they were to be expected as I stampeded with a thousand other people, through the streets of Downingtown, as part of the Good Neighbor Day 5k.
I've run the GND 5k many times in recent years, and always found it to be a well-organized race. And it was again this year, overall. Two things, however, left me a bit disappointed:
- I observed no mile markers, indicating the distance left to run. Perhaps I just missed them, but I've noticed them in previous years.
- The desperately needed water cup I grabbed somewhere around the middle of the route turned out to be empty.
These are minor grievances, but they bring up a fun and important question:
