Scout and Friends Brave Heat to Install Greentree Sandbox

Eagle Scout candidate Alex Krause, 17, is installing a sandbox at Greentree Park in Willistown.

Saturday's scorching sun didn't stop Alex Krause and friends from installing a new sandbox at in Willistown.

Alex, 17, a senior at Great Valley High School and member of Willistown Troop 78, said he expected to work later in the evening than he had originally planned, but he hoped to finish up in one day. The sandbox will measure about 12-by-12-feet, with a built-in bench along the edge.

"I may be here until dinner time," he said. "If we don't finish today, I'll have to fence it off and come back in a few weeks."

The temperature hovered just below 100 F as the volunteers carved out a pit, built and installed a wooden frame, and filled it with stone, fabric and sand. Alex said he had about 4.5 tons of sand on hand, which would provide about 8 inches of depth.

He was helped by the Nussbickel family, the Decker family, his parents, Linda and Karl, sister Katie, and friends Bridget, Adam and Dan, a fellow Scout. The sandbox project is sponsored by Main Line Parent magazine.

Old Oak Tree and Landscaping in Newtown Square lent a Bobcat for the day to help with the earth-moving. Alex said the Bobcat made a huge difference—as he'd be planning to dig and shovel by hand otherwise.
