Malvernites will play an early role in two upcoming Phillies games.
It seems like the baseball action just can't get started at a Phillies game this week until Malvern gives the go-ahead. This week's series versus the St. Louis Cardinals has two local connections. The namesake of Baker Industries was given the duty of throwing out the first pitch Thursday night: On Saturday, expect the dulcet tones of Malvern Prep singers to precede the game:

'Boston is my favorite of all the marathons,' said the Malvern resident, who is known for his pink racing outfit.
Among the runners at the Boston Marathon Monday was Keith Straw, a Malvern resident who is well-known for his unconventional racing outfit—a pink tutu. We reached out to Straw to see if he was OK and if he had thoughts we could deliver to his hometown. He responded Tuesday afternoon:

Congratulations to Kelly Hutchinson, of Wayne, chosen by Patch’s users as the Greatest Baseball Fan 2013. The race was tight and Little League pictures were popular among our users. "The photo was taken at Lower Perkiomen Little League field on July 9 last summer at the District 27 Championships Devon Strafford vs. Upper Providence," Hutchinson told TE Patch. In it, her son Eric is celebrating a big win after a game in which he hit a home run. He's being lifted by players from the previous year's DSLL team, which also won the district championship. Merion Golf Club will host the U.S. Open from June 13 to 16.
When the Masters Tournament concluded Sunday, golf fans worldwide turned their attention to the next major championship: the U.S. Open, coming in less than two months. This year, the world's elite golfers—including No. 1-ranked Tiger Woods and newly crowned Masters champion Adam Scott—will spend their Father's Day weekend here in the Philadelphia area. Merion Golf Club is hosting the U.S. Open. Little Zachary found a baseball on a walk through Malvern and sleeps with it every night.
The votes are in, and one photo subject has emerged as Malvern Patch's Greatest Baseball Fan. Two-and-a-half-year-old Zachary Ebersole drew the most votes with a photo taken at his first-ever Phillies game last year. The photo is now entered into the regional competition for a prize package worth $250. Janine Ebersole, a single mom raising Zachary in Malvern Borough, submitted the photo. She related via email a story demonstrating her son's love of the game. Check out the attached photo to see Zachary suited up for this year's Phillies home opener. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. at Great Valley High School.
The 13th annual Butterfly Run, held at Great Valley High School, takes place Saturday at 9 a.m. The run benefits the Elizabeth Ciunci Scholarship Fund, in memory of a Great Valley High School graduate killed by a drunk driver on Thanksgiving in 1999.
