Giving Tuesday: Give During Holiday Season

Atlanta-based CARE, Habitat for Humanity and Project GRAD Atlanta are among the nonprofits trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to help others.

Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping marathon began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet _ Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, is designed "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." …

How Charitable is Greater Philadelphia?

A report from The Chronicle of Philanthropy looks at how much neighborhoods in the area give to charity.

"How America Gives," a study released by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, aims to “nationwide generosity” by analyzing tax documents and measuring how much money people claimed for charitable donations on their returns. So how charitable is the Greater Philadelphia Area? According to the report, the area’s Patch towns gave over $568,000,000 toward charitable measures in the 2008. “The study is based on exact dollar amounts released by the Internal Revenue Service showing the value of charitable deductions claimed by American taxpayers,” according to a release on the study’s website. The Chronicle obtained comprehensive tax records from the IRS for 2008, the most recent year for which such data are available, to examine income levels and the …

'Coffey Family Fund' Set Up for Crash Victim's Family

Monetary donations can be mailed in or dropped off at TD Bank locations.

A comment on our previous story about Joseph Coffey, who died in a crash in Newtown Square last week, deserves to be highlighted. Coffey is survived by a wife and five school-age children, and friends of the family have set up a charity fund to help them. Reader Heather Fiedler explained what people looking to help can do (emphasis added): Many people have asked me- "what can I do" For those within our GV Community or anyone else who wishes to help the family by Remembering our Dear Friend, The Coffey Family Fund has been set up at TD Bank. Rose Bigelow B-Ball Tourney Returns Saturday

The 3-on-3 tournament is held in memory of a Great Valley teacher's aide, and proceeds go toward a scholarship fund.

There's still time to assemble a team and compete in the annual Rose Bigelow 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which returns to the Great Valley High School gymnasium Saturday. Registrations are taken right up until the 8:30 a.m. tip-off, and last year's event drew more than 300 people. The tournament was created in 2005 in memory of an East Whiteland woman who died unexpectedly the previous year. Rose Bigelow worked as a teacher's aide in the Great Valley School District and her three children attended district schools. Most of the money raised through the tournament goes to scholarship funds for local students in her honor. "She was a great lady, and it's a very happy day, always, to celebrate what a great person she was," said Rose's …

St. Peter's Benefits From Generous Charlestown Student

Isabella Jenney, 10, asked friends to donate to the church's food pantry in lieu of birthday gifts.

A few years ago, a young girl made a request for her birthday, as young girls are apt to do. If you don’t know Isabella Penney, then it may surprise you to learn that her request was not for an iPod, Wii or a new pair of sneakers. Rather, this young lady asked simply that her friends and family donate food in lieu of buying her gifts. The charity she chose to be the recipient of her collection was the food pantry at St. Peter’s Church. Like Kashmiera Cosenza, that selfless act and the work she has done since have caught the attention of Father Koshy Mathews, who correctly assessed both girls as having an exceptionally singular spirit. Interestingly enough, the two girls are not connected and neither is actually a member of the St. Peter's …
