Why You Might See Grade-Schoolers Reciting Poetry Thursday

As part of 'Keep a Poem in Your Pocket Day,' General Wayne Elementary students are encouraged to read poems at local businesses.

Editor's Note: The following information is from General Wayne Elementary School librarian Marilyn Rothberg. April is National Poetry Month. BUT THIS YEAR, we are bringing poetry to the town of Malvern!!!  We hope that your family will consider visiting the businesses of Malvern that afternoon. Have your student go into a store that has our special poster and share a poem from their pocket. They may even be given a little “treat” by the store owners.  This is being coordinated by the General Wayne Elementary School, the Malvern Public Library’s and the Malvern Business & Professional Association. Police have not released the name of a Willistown man who allegedly fired a gun on Sycamore Circle, causing nearby General Wayne Elementary School to lock down just before dismissal time, around 3:30 p.m., Monday afternoon. I have been afraid of such an overreaction for a long time, a classic case of "to a hammer, everything looks like a nail". Paramilitary response has its place in police work. There are criminal organizations as well trained and equipped as any army combat unit, although so far as I know, none operate in our specific locality. But let us be frank about this: not so many years ago, an incident such…   more ›
