Where Was This Photo Taken?

It was somewhere in the Malvern area, but where exactly?

The building pictured in the photo above was constructed in 1839 and is still standing today. The photo was taken in 1979. Can you guess where the photo was taken? Submit your answers in the comments, and we'll post the correct answer with a current photo next Wednesday.

Historic Church Road Home Has Walk-In Fireplace

Last week's historical photo depicted a house at the corner of Church and West Swedesford roads.

The house shown in last week's historical photo challenge is fairly prominent, and commenters were quick to name the location. The house, built in 1745 and still standing today, is located on Church Road at West Swedesford Road. It is the Edward Kennison House, according to papers documenting its historical status with the county and state (attached): Correct answers to last week's photo poured in immediately. Tom Logue was the first to peg the intersection, and he was echoed by Andrea Lynch, Danielle, Kristin Thomas, Matthew Strauss and Anthony Gentile. marion1 posed a question about the home:  And, for perhaps the first time in this historical photo series, the owner commented: Bill Daily The historical documents list a "bake oven" as …

Historic Home Belonged to 'Aggressive Minister'

The Zook surname pops up again in this week's historical photo reveal.

A familiar surname is involved in the answer to last week's historical photo challenge. The house and barn in the photos once belonged to the Zook family, not unlike the barn we featured recently. None of the answers from commenters mentioned Zook, but a few had the correct location of the photos. The house is located at 10 Winding Way, and the barn is at 12 Winding Way. According to Tim Caban of the East Whiteland Historical Commission, which supplied the old photos, they were taken in 1979 and the buildings were erected circa 1780. He provided a bit more information about each building: Kudos to new commenter david shaver, who was the first to answer correctly, and to Kristen Klugh Cannella, who was just a hair off on the specific …

Historical Building's Style Is Carpenter Gothic

Plenty of commenters guessed the location quickly.

Well, hopefully the massive correct response to last week's historical photo will help repair all our egos from the week everyone guessed the wrong pond. Donna was the first to chime in with the correct location:  According to Tim Caban of the East Whiteland Historical Commission, the address is 638 Lancaster Avenue in Frazer. A historical narrative provides some background on the building: Here are some of the other correct answers: Gary Dippel: Sarah A: Paula K Eric Lewis, in his trademark workmanlike deductive process, includes a Google Streetview link:

Another Peek at Zook Barn

The historical commission dug up another photo of the recently featured historical site.

When we featured Zook Barn as a recent historical photo challenge, we used a Library of Congress photo. In the comments section, Paula K, noted that she had photographed the barn, too: East Whiteland Historical Commission member Tim Caban took a look and found one of those photos. Taken in 1979, it is presumably the last photo taken of the barn:

Zook Barn Is a Switzer Barn

How Zook acquired it is probably an interesting story, but the Library of Congress documentation doesn't share the nitty gritty details.

Last week's historical photo challenge was supposed to be a bit of a noodle-scratcher, but the correct answer was delivered fairly quickly by Eric Lewis. The barn in the photo is Zook Barn, which was located on the south side of King Road, a half-mile west of Route 352, near Villa Maria Academy Lower School. No remnants of the barn are visible from the road. The William Henry Apartments are the closest structures to the location described, which is why they're pictured above.  The Library of Congress, whence the historical photo came, provides a historical narrative (PDF) identifying the barn as a Switzer barn. The narrative dryly details its timeline and construction but glosses over the most interesting tidbit (emphasis added): According…

Another lesson in local history. Thanks Pete. I had never heard of a Switzer barn. I didn't recognize the log construction, either, so thank you to those who helped fill in the blanks.   more ›

if its the Zook barn, thats on Immaculata property, west of wm henry, not east. it was tucked down away from the road on the south side of king. When we were taking the pictures for the township files, in the 1980's it was in very sad shape...not nearly as good as this photo. This is probably the Library of Congress collection from the 1930's era? Not too many log barns in this area, most were …   more ›
