Tom Rogers, 17, a Great Valley High School senior, is collecting sporting goods to donate to children in Moonachie, NJ, which flooded during Hurricane Sandy last year. Donations can be dropped off at Malvern Public Library by April 15. A Life Scout in Troop 76 out of Frazer, Tom is hoping to achieve scouting's highest rank, and the Moonachie donation effort is his Eagle Scout project. If you're car shopping, you'll want to be on the look out for vehicles that saw the worst of Hurricane Sandy.
Information provided by AAA: Thousands of vehicles were damaged in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but not all were total losses. AAA Mid-Atlantic warns potential car buyers that flood-damaged vehicles may soon be making their way to used car dealers throughout our region and across the country for resale. “If you’re looking at buying a used car, inspect it carefully for food damage. Also, you should research the car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) prior to purchase, and be sure to contact your insurance company before purchasing a flood-damaged vehicle,” advises Jenny M. Local volunteers helped firefighters based hurt by Hurricane Sandy.
Volunteers from East Whiteland Fire Company joined with several nearby fire companies in a trip to hurricane-ravaged New York last on Saturday, Nov. 18. The trip was through an organization called Firefighters Helping Firefighters: Our mission is to aid and assist New Jersey’s career and volunteer firefighters and their families, when they become sick, injured, or experience personal loss. In addition to donating their time and labor to help rebuild after the hurricane, East Whiteland Fire Company donated thousands of dollars in gift cards to Home Depot, according to Fire Chief Ken Hurley. Hurricane Sandy has caused severe damage to many local businesses. if you're a small business owner, here's some helpful advice for how to recover.
1) File insurance claims as soon as possible, if you haven't already done so. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners offers important advice and tips for filing your claim. The National Flood Insurance Program also provides information on filing a flood insurance claim. 2) The Small Business Administration offers several low-interest, long-term disaster loans to small businesses in declared disaster areas, including business physical disaster loans and economic injury disaster loans. You can apply for loans up to $2 million for both uninsured and underinsured damages. You can apply directly online. Editor's note: The following information comes from Kristin Thomas of the Malvern MOMS club. The MOMS Club of Malvern is helping to collect basic necessities to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. We will be filling a bus with items and delivering them to a distribution center next weekend. If you'd like to help, please consider donating: Items can be dropped off at the Nelson's home at 340 East Broad Street in Malvern before Friday [Nov. 9, 2012] at noon. Please put items into boxes or hefty bags and leave them on the tarp in the driveway. Items will then be moved to the storage warehouse next door at Nelson Roofing every evening. It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. Sandy is mostly gone. What do residents and officials need to fix now?
The dangerous strong winds and deluges of ex-Hurricane Sandy—the massive, possibly once-in-a-mid-Atlantic-lifetime confluence of tropical storm and nor'easter—moved out of the Philadelphia area on Tuesday. Ill effects varied in severity throughout the region, though nowhere in the city or Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties did they approach the destruction and chaos seen at the Jersey Shore, where Sandy had alighted from the Atlantic Ocean. The most significant tangible effects of the storm were widespread power outages, road blockages from debris and floods, and closures to schools, businesses and government agencies.
