Police Chief to Leave Malvern PD

Chief Mark Ercole will leave the Malvern Police Department in June, and it's not clear who will take his place.

Malvern Police Chief Mark Ercole will return to the East Whiteland Police Department when the contract that brought him to the borough expires in June. At a Borough Council meeting Tuesday night, Malvern Mayor Jerry McGlone said that Ercole had "respectfully requested that the borough not re-up the contract." Ercole was an EWPD lieutenant when the borough and East Whiteland Township struck a one-year contract in 2012 for his services as police chief.  The borough is pursuing a similar contract with East Whiteland Township to bring another EWPD officer on as chief, but no plans have been finalized.  "I think [Malvern Police Department] is running well now under Mark, and I'd like to see that continue," McGlone said. Any word at last nights council meeting about who may replace Chief Ercole?? I was at the February council meeting when Jon Mcnamee spoke. I think it took a lot of courage for him to speak up. To Interested Observer: Mcnamee is young and would make a good sergeant to help prepare him to be chief someday. I'm sure council will make a thoughtful choice for the next chief.   more ›

Malvern Man Suing Borough Police in Federal Court

John Edler claims to have been mistreated by police in October 2011, according to an article in Main Line Media News.

A Malvern man who was arrested for public drunkenness in the early morning hours of Oct. 2, 2011, has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Malvern Police Department. John Edler, now 61, said he had called the police department to request a ride home from a local pub, according to a report in Main Line Media News: Edler's suit says he sustained injuries in the back of the vehicle due to reckless driving. He later requested the department investigate the incident, but was instead cited for public drunkenness. Police told Malvern Patch soon after the arrest that they had responded to a report of a man stumbling down the street, and that Edler became loud and abusive. Edler fought the public drunkenness charge and was found not …

"became loud and abusive" say the police. Edler was found not guilty of the one charge at a trial in front of a district justice who was an ex-police officer. At the trial, no evidence (as in the testimony of two officers under oath) of the victim being "loud and abusive". The evidence offered to show "danger to himself or others": leaning on something. Don't jump to conclusions about the merits …   more ›

Dear Pete: We are still hearing "rumbling" that the disbandment of our valued/needed police department is still on the agenda. I am thrilled that Lt Ercole was hired to be chief ( that problem solved). The King Street development has not even been done yet and all those residents and clients will bring more need of the departments service. Keep us up to date please. Thanks   more ›
