PA Can Be Energy Independent in 6 Years, Governor Says

Speaking in Malvern last week, Gov. Tom Corbett said the state's abundant energy resources could make the commonwealth a supplier of energy instead of a purchaser.

Gov. Tom Corbett told a crowd of Chester County business and civic leaders last Thursday that the commonwealth could become energy independent in five or six years. "Right now, we're the fifth-largest energy producer in the country, but we're the second-largest energy field in the world," Corbett said.  The prediction came during a discussion of economic and business issues at Chester Valley Golf Club in Malvern. Before a luncheon crowd of about 300, the governor answered questions from 6ABC reporter Nydia Han and a few pre-selected audience members. The topics ranged from corporate taxes to Marcellus Shale to Corbett's recent comments about drug use in the state's workforce, which he said were misconstrued as a cause of the state's high …

The borough is being rewarded for recycling more than 1,300 tons of material in 2010, according to state Sen. Andy Dinniman.

State Sen. Andrew Dinniman announced Tuesday that Malvern Borough will receive $16,805 in state grant funds to maintain its recycling program. The funds are being awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Development and Implementation Grant Program.  One other Chester County municipality will also receive funding, according to the press release from Dinniman's office: “It’s good to see municipalities in our region taking on the challenge to recycle more. In doing so, they’re protecting our environment, conserving energy, reducing waste and helping ensure a cleaner, brighter future for our region,” Dinniman said in the release.   The full press release from Sen. Dinniman's office is below. “It’s …

It's Official: Schwartz Is Running for Governor

Multiple media outlets reporting Schwartz has filed to run in 2014 on Monday.

We've been hearing the rumors for months, but it is finally official. U.S. Rep. Alyson Schwartz filed paperwork today to run for governor in 2014. According to philly.com, Schwartz said she hopes to beat out current Gov. Tom Corbett and his “failed leadership” that "has crippled the Pennsylvania economy in a competitive world." “He’s just missing in action most of the time,” Schwartz, of Montgomery County, said in an interview with philly.com. Schwartz told the online news source the state’s unemployment rate "has been well above the national average during Corbett’s term." “What I’m hearing from people around the state is that they know we need a fresh perspective about the economy and growth,” she said. According to The Hill, Schwartz "…

Dog Shooting Should Be Curbed, State Sen. Says

Andy Dinniman wants to make it more difficult to legally shoot a dog, and easier for grieving pet owners to sue.

In the aftermath of the shooting of two Chester County dogs, state Sen. Andy Dinniman will introduce a pair of bills punishing animal abuse, the senator announced on his website last week. According to the release, Dinniman’s first bill changes the circumstances under which it is legal to shoot a dog. Under Dinniman’s bill, some Pennsylvania residents would be allowed to shoot a dog that entered their property if it was chasing another animal “with apparent intent to harm.” The current law allows residents to shoot dogs that are simply pursuing another animal. The bill would apply only to state counties with populations of over 210,000, of which Chester County is one. The second bill would allow grieving pet owners to sue if their pet is …

Defibrillators Should be in All Schools, Senator Urges

State Sen. Andy Dinniman is introducing a bill to place automated external defibrillators in schools.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently announced he is pursuing legislation in Harrisburg that would put automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, into all public schools in Pennsylvania. In a press release, Dinniman referred to American Heart Association statistics that indicate more than 95 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before they can be taken to a hospital. He cited Villa Maria High School student Blair Allenas a success story and an example of the critical role an AED can play in a school crisis: Dinniman is working with the parents of Aidan Silva, 7, who died from cardiac arrest in September 2010. According to Christy and Steve Silva's tribute blog for their son, Dinniman's bill, known as currently has 13 co-sponsors in …

Victims Advocate Fights for Sexually Abused Children

East Whiteland resident Maureen Martinez wants legislation to abolish the statute of limitations on sex abuse charges in Pennsylvania.

East Whiteland resident Maureen Martinez is the president of Justice 4 PA Kids, an organization dedicated to eliminating the Pennsylvania statutes of limitations for childhood sexual abuse. A bill to do just that never made it to a floor vote in 2012 in Harrisburg, but she's hoping 2013 will prove more fruitful. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Malvern Borough until 2011, when she learned that a priest there was among 21 facing allegations of sexual abuse.  She answered via email our questions about the legislative process, her goals for Justice 4 PA Kids, and what people should know about childhood sexual abuse. Malvern Patch: If you could snap your fingers and enact one law tomorrow, what would it be? Maureen Martinez: …

Tuesday Vote Will Shape GVSD Budget Process

The Great Valley School Board will decide Tuesday night whether to keep Act 1 exceptions on the table.

At its Tuesday night meeting, the Great Valley School District Board of Directors will decide whether to keep any tax increase for the 2013-14 school year within the state-mandated inflation index of 1.7 percent. The vote will determine how—and when—the rest of the budgeting process will unfold. The decision boils down to approving one of two resolutions, as stated in the online meeting agenda: Board adopts resolution to either approve going forward with the Act 1 budget process and applying for eligible referendums or adopts a resolution to waive the Act 1 process and construct the budget within the 1.7% Index for the 2013-2014 School Year. The above slide, taken from the Jan. 14 Great Valley School Board budget presentation, lists the …

Dinniman to Hold State Senate Seat

The incumbent candidate for the 19th District defeated his challenger, Chris Amentas.

State Sen. Andrew Dinniman was reelected Tuesday night to serve a second full term as a Pennsylvania state senator representing the 19th district. Dinniman defeated Republican challenger Chris Amentas, an East Fallowfield Township Supervisor, by about 16 percentage points. He celebrated the victory at his Exton campaign headquarters with more than a dozen supporters—family, staff and volunteers, and his dog Henry.  Dinniman was a Chester County Commissioner when he was elected to state senate in 2006 to serve out the term of the late state Sen. Robert Thompson. He was re-elected to a full term in 2008. Looking to the six years ahead, Dinniman said he hopes to improve the state's education system, avoiding a "one-size-fits-all" approach to …
