Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over the Philadelphia area and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. East Goshen Farmers' Market is breaking its normal Thursday schedule to hold a Thanksgiving Market for Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. The market will be held in the usual location, East Goshen Park off Paoli Pike, just across the Willistown border. In Chestnut Hill, they have a very special turkey that will cost you $28,000. At the Philadelphia Print Shop, an 1860 chromolithograph of a turkey by John James Audobon titled “Wild Turkey. Male. American Cane" hangs prominently on the wall. Even though the print is a second edition, it is actually more rare than the first edition, according to Jane Toczek, who works in the shop. "The first edition in the same size was made in London.
