Valentine’s Day is in the air and with it, romance. You may be thinking about the most romantic thing your boyfriend, husband or past love did for you this time of year. We want to know your story. I loved reading a great proposal story in our Cutest Couple Contest in Radnor: “My best friend proposed to me with a surprise homemade documentary on how perfect we are for each other this October at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. The votes are in and Heather McFeeley and her boyfriend John Lorentson have been named Patch’s Cutest Couple. McFeeley’s mother, Patty McFeeley, entered the couple in the Springfield Patch contest. Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day when couples go out, so what happens when so many couples go out on the same night? Two words: babysitter shortage. It can be difficult in the first place to find someone you trust to look after your children, but Valentine’s Day presents an additional challenge. Most couples would like to go on Valentine’s Day, which stretches the babysitter pool and on top of that, many babysitters themselves have Valentine’s Day dates, whether they’re grandparents, students or anywhere in between. The National Retail Federation is anticipating Americans will shell out huge amounts of money this year on Valentine's Day gifts and services, far more than years in the past. That's how much the upcoming romantic holiday will total in 2012, but the real question is: How much will you spend? Vote in our Patch Poll and comment on why you spend so little -- or so much.
Fortunately, there is an easy cure.
Nothing says Happy Valentine’s Day like a fresh bouquet of roses. And nothing is more disappointing than when the necks of those roses wilt and ruin the display. Fortunately, there is an easy cure. Remove the roses from their vase. Recut the stems and submerge the whole rose – stem, leaves, flowers and all – in a sink or tub of warm water. Leave the roses submerged for 30 minutes. Use that time to clean and refill the vase with fresh water and a bit of floral preservative. Recut the stems on a slant, underwater if possible and place the roses back in the vase. You will have perky fresh roses to enjoy for a week or more. And preserve a few of your favorite roses. Gather a few stems together with a rubberband. Use a spring loaded …
