ReplySusan: drove past today and realized the little bldgs behind Jack's that you could see from the WaWa parking lot are gone. oops. Why did I not notice that before? Exton still has a similar tourist camp on the north side of 30 past the BP station, it's abandoned. My grandmother's journal notes they took the Lincoln Hwy to East Berlin the first day, 85 miles- 8 flat tires that first day--then they discovered Permaloc patches. It took 35 days to get to Santa Monica!

ReplyAgree with Donna on location on rt. 30 west of the movie theater. It's not the hairdresser though, maybe a contractor? This is one of a handful of houses remaining that used to be residences along the Lincoln Highway. Sidebar---The current Jack's Pizza was a "tourist camp", (early version of a motel)--the tiny bldgs behind the main bldg. In 1923,my grandparents drove from PA to California using the Lincoln Hwy and other grand roads of the day---and it was a splurge to stay at a tourist camp instead of the tent they carried. Her journal is fascinating still today-

Replyif its the Zook barn, thats on Immaculata property, west of wm henry, not east. it was tucked down away from the road on the south side of king. When we were taking the pictures for the township files, in the 1980's it was in very sad shape...not nearly as good as this photo. This is probably the Library of Congress collection from the 1930's era? Not too many log barns in this area, most were fieldstone.

Replylet's hope the actual plan is in practical terms and not the "government speak" of the commisioners. Good grief, it was painful to read!

ReplyWow checked out Kristin's new photo she links to in her post....it is surreal--looks like a giant wooden movie set looming on the horizon. i remember the pretty renderings of the King St side during the township approval dog and pony show. Obviously no one asked what it would be from the back. Ronnie is right that Malvern has a real identity crisis. Author Kristen---love your line about marching from Malvern to Valley Forge on the trails. You would feel like a soldier if you trudge from town to wegmans, buy groceries and trudge home--uphill!

ReplyThe Daily local goes into more detail on the cholera legend and that it likely was more sinister. K. Lee is correct. They recovered a bullet in one of the skulls--kudos to Sen. Casey for getting permission to continue the recovery of remains. And also to the cemetery for donating the burial space.
